Co-op games for a first date: 13 easy picks — yes, including Netflix
The best co-op games for a first date are short, free (or free for the person you invite), cross-platform and easy to learn — so you spend the evening laughing and talking, not reading a tutorial. Below are 13 picks that work with someone you just matched with, grouped by situation, with what each one costs your date, where it runs and whether you need voice chat.
Checked on 2 October 2026. Prices, platforms and cross-play can change — check the game's page before you send the invite.
How to choose a game for a first gaming date
A good first-date game removes friction instead of adding a challenge. Look for five things:
- It costs your date nothing — free, playable in a browser, or covered by a free friend's pass.
- It runs on both of your devices — same platform family, cross-play, or a browser.
- A session takes 15 to 60 minutes, with natural breaks to talk.
- It's easy to learn, so a skill gap doesn't decide the mood.
- It fits how much talking you're both comfortable with — some games need voice, some don't.

Free in your browser: no install, no account
If you've just matched, start with a game that needs nothing but a link.
Codenames Duet
Codenames Duet is the two-player, cooperative version of the word game: you give each other one-word clues to find your agents on a shared grid within a limited number of turns. The official free version runs in the browser at codenames.game, with no account and no download. A game takes about 15 minutes, and the clues you choose say a lot about how you think.
Skribbl.io
Skribbl.io is a free drawing-and-guessing game in the browser. Create a private room, share the link, and take turns drawing while the other guesses. Bad drawings are half the fun, which takes the pressure off immediately.
One copy is enough
These games need only one person to own them — handy when you don't want to ask someone you just met to buy anything.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
One of you sees a bomb on screen; the other reads the defusal manual, which is free to view or print at bombmanual.com. Neither of you can win alone, so you have to talk — fast. Rounds last about five minutes, which makes it easy to stop or keep going. It runs on PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and VR.
Split Fiction and It Takes Two
Both are story-driven games built only for two players. With the free Friend's Pass, one of you buys the game and invites the other to play the whole thing at no cost. Split Fiction supports cross-play between PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 (each player needs an EA account). It Takes Two only connects players within the same platform family — PlayStation with PlayStation, Xbox with Xbox, PC with PC. Chapters run about an hour, so they suit a date that's going well more than a first hello.
Free to download and cross-platform
Sky: Children of the Light
Sky is a free, gentle adventure where you fly, explore and hold hands with other players, without needing to say a word. It runs on iOS, Android, Switch, PlayStation and PC (Steam), with cross-play. If either of you is shy, it's one of the kindest ways to spend time together online.
Fall Guys
Fall Guys is a free party game where you stumble through obstacle courses with dozens of other players. It runs on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch with full cross-play, and rounds take a few minutes. It's competitive, but so chaotic that nobody takes losing seriously.
We Were Here
We Were Here is a free two-player puzzle game on Steam. The game separates you in an abandoned castle and you can only communicate through a walkie-talkie, so each of you sees half of every puzzle. Both players need a microphone, and it takes an evening of steady talking — great if you both like to chat.
If you both already own it
Minecraft
Minecraft's Bedrock edition lets Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS and Android players build together. Working on something side by side is a relaxed way to talk — but both of you need the game.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley's online co-op is a cozy second-date idea: run a farm together at your own pace. It doesn't support cross-play, so you need to be on the same platform — PC with PC, PlayStation with PlayStation, Xbox with Xbox, Switch with Switch.
The pick nobody expects: Netflix
Against all expectations, the most practical first-date console might be the Netflix subscription you already pay for. Not "Netflix and chill" — Netflix and Pictionary. Since late 2025, Netflix runs party games on the TV and at Netflix.com, and each player's phone becomes the controller.
Why it works for a date at home:
- It's included in every Netflix plan, with no ads or in-app purchases in the games.
- Only the host needs a subscription. Your date scans the QR code on the screen, and their phone doesn't need to be signed in to Netflix. It just needs the Netflix app on Android, or the Netflix Game Controller app on iPhone or iPad (iOS 17 or later).
- No console, no gamepad, nothing to buy.
The party games that work with just the two of you:
- Pictionary: Game Night (2–10 players): you sketch on your phone while the other person guesses.
- Boggle Party (1–8 players): race the clock to find the longest words in a letter grid.
- LEGO Party! (1–4 players): quick, silly minigames.
- Tetris Time Warp (1–4 players): Tetris that warps you between eras of the game (1984, 1989, 1993), each with its own rules.
- Fibbage 4, in The Jackbox Party Essentials (2–8 players): invent fake answers to trivia questions and spot the real one.
- Overcooked! All You Can Eat (up to 4 players): the kitchen chaos from the next section, included with Netflix since 5 March 2026.
- Codenames Party (1–10 players): added on 29 September 2026, with a one-against-all Party Mode, the classic team mode and Case Studies.
Save these for a bigger group: Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends (3–6 players), Dead Man's Party: A Knives Out Game (4–8 players), and Quiplash 3 and Drawful 2 in The Jackbox Party Essentials (3–8 players).
These games are built for one screen in one room, so Netflix is a date-at-home idea rather than an online first hello. For now they're only offered in about twenty countries (including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil and Mexico), and the catalogue changes often — check the Games row on Netflix before you plan the evening.
Couch co-op for when you meet in person
Overcooked! All You Can Eat
Overcooked turns the two of you into a kitchen where orders pile up and everything catches fire. Levels last a few minutes. It's great for laughs on the same sofa, and the All You Can Eat edition also offers online cross-play on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. Fair warning: it shows how you both handle pressure. It's also included with Netflix: since 5 March 2026 you can play it on a TV or at Netflix.com, up to four players, with your phones as controllers — and characters from Stranger Things and KPop Demon Hunters in the kitchen.
Unravel Two
Unravel Two is a calm puzzle platformer about two little yarn creatures tied together. It's local co-op only, which makes it a sweet in-person date rather than an online one.
What to avoid on a first gaming date
Some games are great — just not for a first date:
- Ranked competitive modes, where a loss can sour the mood.
- Huge MMOs or 100-hour campaigns that take an evening just to set up.
- Horror games, unless you've both said you love them.
- Anything your date has to buy just to try it.
- Games with a big skill gap, where one of you spends the night watching.
Not sure yet? Warm up with a two-minute game first
Before you plan a whole evening, find out whether the conversation flows. In Midnight Lobby, every match can start a Duo Breaker — one of eight short two-player games inside the chat, such as Draw & Guess or Word Guess. You can also open a Lobby: a single, open invitation to play one of those games one-on-one, visible to eligible players for a limited time; they see your profile before taking the seat.
These are Midnight Lobby's own mini-games, not the games on this page — think of them as the warm-up. If it clicks, pick a game from the list above for your first real date.
Keep it comfortable
Share your gamer tag or Discord only when you're comfortable, keep the first session short, and stop while it's still fun. If something feels off, you can block and report someone in Midnight Lobby.
Frequently asked questions
What's a good game for a first gaming date?
A short, cooperative game that costs your date nothing and runs on both of your devices — for example Codenames Duet or Skribbl.io in a browser, Sky: Children of the Light if you'd rather not use voice, or Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes if you both like to talk.
What if we play on different platforms?
Choose a browser game (Codenames Duet, Skribbl.io) or a cross-play game: Sky: Children of the Light, Fall Guys, Split Fiction, Minecraft (Bedrock) and Overcooked! All You Can Eat all let different platforms play together.
Do we need voice chat?
Not always. Codenames Duet and Skribbl.io work with text chat, and Sky needs no talking at all. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes and We Were Here can't be played without voice.
Which co-op games are free?
Codenames Duet and Skribbl.io in a browser; Sky: Children of the Light and Fall Guys to download; We Were Here on Steam. With Split Fiction and It Takes Two, only one of you buys the game — the other plays free with the Friend's Pass. And if one of you already pays for Netflix, its party games are included.
How long should a first gaming date last?
Plan for 30 to 60 minutes. Short rounds make it easy to stop while it's fun, or to say "one more" if it's going well.
Can we play Netflix games on a date?
Yes — and it's a better idea than it sounds. Netflix's party games run on a TV or at Netflix.com, each player uses their phone as the controller, and only the host needs a subscription. Pictionary: Game Night, Boggle Party, LEGO Party!, Tetris Time Warp, Fibbage 4 (in The Jackbox Party Essentials), Overcooked! All You Can Eat and Codenames Party all work with two players. They're made for the same room, so keep them for a date at home.
Can we play these games inside Midnight Lobby?
No. Midnight Lobby has its own eight short two-player games, the Duo Breakers, which you can start in a chat or through a Lobby. The games on this page are played in their own apps — use a Duo Breaker as the warm-up, then pick one of them for your date.
